Important Update: Status of Current Property Tax Data

A quick note to recent visitors to Illinois Property Tax Relief:

Our site was formed almost two years ago to help homeowners appeal their property taxes using publicly-available data from the Cook County Assessor's office. We felt that by providing better, easy-to-use tools, homeowners could appeal their own taxes.

However, the Assessor's office has a new policy allowing businesses to pay a fee to obtain up-to-date assessment information. Since we provide our tools for free, we do not have the money necessary to license the data. Thus, our information is out of date.

We are looking into getting funding or otherwise obtaining access to the data, but until we do, we don't have recent assessment data, and homeowners are advised to either contact a property tax consultant or try to use the tools on the Assessor's web site to appeal their taxes.

Leyden Assessments Due Soon

Homeowners in the Leyden Township have until August 8th to get their appeals in the Cook County Assessor's office. Postmark dates are fine, so get your appeals in the mail by Tuesday.

Jefferson Township Appeals Due September 5th

Reassessment notices were mailed out recently for Jefferson township. Interestingly, homeowners seem to have been given an extra week or so to get their appeals in -- September 5th. That's good news, since many homeowners saw increases of 40-50% in their assessments, according to our assessment increase report. Do yourself a favor and sign up to use our Tax Appeal Wizard.

Last Day for Lake View Appeals

Remember, assessment appeals for the Lake View township must either be filed electronically or postmarked by today in order to be accepted by the Cook County Assessor's office.

Lake Township Assessments Mailed

Assessments mailed for Niles, Maine, and Elk Grove

LakeView Property Values Skyrocket

Newly assessed values were mailed out in late May for properties in the Lakeview township. <%=PropertyTaxAppeal.Web.Helper.GetSiteName() %> has analyzed the data and noticed that residential properties' assessments have increased dramatically. On average, assessed values rose by over 30 percent, although single family homes rose as much as 91% depending on the age and size. View the report here.

New Lakeview Assessments on Monday

Assessment notices will be mailed to Cook County homeowners in the Lakeview township this Monday, May 22nd. The Lakeview township is one of eight reassessment districts whose property values will be be reevaluated this year, which could mean a big bump in residents' tax bills. You can view the assessment mailing dates and filing deadlines at the Cook County Assessor's web site.

Property Taxes Rise Again

Despite the recent 7% assessment cap for Cook County property tax increases, homeowners are feeling the crunch as they receive their new tax bills. The cap is less help than one would think, and it will expire in 2006 unless the state votes to extend the cap.

If you want to appeal your tax assessment, you need to get started right away, since you only have 30 days (see the deadlines for your township here).
